Del Potro’s tough victory against Llodra in Marseille, Janowicz also wins

In a repeat of last year’s final, Juan Martin Del Potro was successful once more but didn’t have it all his own way against Michael Llodra  in the 3-6 7-6 7-5 victory. As to be expected, serve was dominant with just two breaks in the whole match. After Llodra saved early break points in the first set, there were no more chances for a break until Del Potro was serving at 3-4 as the Argentinian was broken allowing Llodra to serve out the set which he did to love.

Both players had their chances in the second but neither could make a breakthrough, meaning a tie break would be needed to settle the second set. After losing the first point on serve, Del Potro would recover to force a decider, eventually taking the tie break 7-4 after breaking the Llodra serve three times. Llodra would once more have the better chances, with five break point chances left unconverted in the final set. After a Del Potro ace wiped out a match point at 4-5, he would go onto hold and then break Llodra who had not even been pushed to deuce in the set until 5-5. Del Potro would then serve out the match with ease to move into the quarter finals.

Julien Benneteau would make it two Frenchmen going out on this day of play as he fell to a 6-7(0) 3-6 defeat from Jerzy Janowicz. Benneteau had a set point at 5-4 40-30 but failed to convert in a set where break points were at a minimum. It would go to a tie break and Benneteau would fall apart, losing every single point in the breaker and then opening the second set by losing seven more in a row. He saved two of the break opportunities afforded to Janowicz but couldn’t save a third giving the Pole the all important break. Both players would have chances to break in the following games but neither would convert and it was plain sailing from then on as Janowicz booked a tie with top seed Czech Berdych.
