Cilic and Dolgopolov advance to Memphis quarter-finals

Marin Cilic and Alexandr Dolgopolov entered the quarterfinals at ATP tournament in Memphis after winning their three-sets matches, while Denis Istomin threw out Lleyton Hewitt with ease.

First seed Croatian Cilic made his way to the quarterfinals at Memphis ATP tournament after defeating home Igor Sijsling of Netherlands in a two hours and a half long mini-marathon. The Dutch player will feel he deserved more from the second round match as he lost the battle without dropping a service game. He produced the only break point of the opening set, yet he could not avoid the tie-break which went the Croatian’s way in the end. The first and last break of serve occurred in the second set after which the players were back on level terms. Cilic was the first to generate a match ball in the decider at 6-5, yet a dramatic breaker would follow. Sijsling had two match balls, but gave them both away and let the top seed finish him off with a 7-6 (2), 3-6, 7-6 (7) final score.

Former World number one Hewitt was a bit lucky to avoid the first round exit in Memphis, but was always the second best in today’s encounter against Uzbek Istomin. The latter stunned John Isner in the opening round and was even more convincing this time as he swept Hewitt off the court after achieving a double break in each of the two sets. The clash lasted only one hour and ended with a 6-1, 6-2 Istomin success.

Seventh-seeded Ukrainian Dolgopolov did not have it easy against US qualifier Rhyne Williams in the second round. The 159th-ranked American started brightly in a slightly bizarre first set as he broke Dolgopolov three times and suffered one loss of serve by 4-1. He was in a very comfortable position, but the Ukrainian produced an unbelievable comeback and won all of the remaining games of the set, grabbing three breaks in the process. The set number two was packed with break point chances, but only the last one was converted – it was the American’s second set ball and the score was level again. Only one more break ball was generated after that – Dolgopolov broke Williams to love in the third game of the decider and ultimately served out the match in the same fashion. The result: 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
