Del Potro defeats Benneteau to capture Rotterdam title

Juan Martin del Potro became only the second Argentine player to win the ABN Amro Rotterdam event after Guillermo Vilas managed to capture the crown many years ago. Del Potro did so by defeating Frenchman Julien Benneteau in Sunday’s final, prevailing 7-6 (2) 6-3.

Benneteau started the match on a high note, taking the Argentine’s serve for a 2-0 lead. It has to be noted that this was the first time Del Potro dropped his serve in this tournament as he managed to hold onto all of his 40 service games in the previous encounters. However, the 2009 US Open champion picked himself up and with some solid baseline hitting, not only did he level the score at 2-2, but took Benneteau’s serve once more to get to a 4-2 lead. Despite the Frenchman finding a way to get back into the set and force a tiebreak, Del Potro stormed to take it for a lead in the match.

After the big serving Argentine broke Benneteau at the beginning of the second set he never looked back. Although the Frenchman saved four matchpoints when serving at 2-5 down, Delpo wrapped up the set and the match in the very next game.
