Azarenka beats Serena Williams to win Qatar Open 2013

The fans and the organisers of the WTA really got what they wanted in both the singles and doubles finals in Doha, as the first seeds played the second seeds in both events. Serena Williams upended Victoria Azarenka’s run as the WTA’s number 1 player when she made it to the semis, becoming the oldest woman in WTA history to become world number one. Also on Serena’s plus side was the fact that she led the head to head stat 11-1 – including 9 consecutive wins in their last meetings. However, this time it was Azarenka who managed to emerge victorious, winning 7-6 (3) 2-6 6-3.

Azarenka got the first break to lead 3-1 but Williams broke back to lead 5-4. Azarenka then held for 6-6 and took the breaker 8-6 to settle the first hard fought set. In the second set it was Williams who broke to lead 3-1 and ran though the rest of the set to take it 6-2. Azarenka started the decider and immediately ran up a 3-0 lead before Williams got a game. Williams served at 2-5 to stay in the match and held, but Azarenka served out for 6-3 and the title.

In the doubles, 1st seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci of Italy took on Nadia Petrova of Russia and Katarina Srebotnik of Slovakia. Petrova and Srebotnik quickly ran up a 6-2 first set but the Italians took the second set 6-3 and forced a first to 10 points third set. After going down 0-3 the Italians broke back to wrap up the set 10-6 for their 14th win this year.
