Serena beats Sharapova to set up Doha final against Azarenka

In the first of the two semi finals played on Saturday evening in Doha after two riveting doubles matches, top seed Victoria Azarenka met 4th seed Agnieszka Radwanska. Azarenka led the head to head stat 11-3, with the Pole’s last victory in Japan in 2011. Added to the interest was the fact that Azarenka had just the previous night lost her number one WTA ranking to Serena Williams.

Azarenka got the first break in the 5th game of the first set to lead 3-2 and she allowed Radwanska just one more game before serving out for a 6-3 first set. She started the second set, held and ran up a 3-0 lead before the Pole got on the scoreboard and she would be allowed just two more games before Azarenka wrapped up the second set at 6-3.

Serena Williams, the new WTA number one but seeded second in this tournament, met 3rd seed Maria Sharapova in the second semi final. Serena began this match and games went with serve until the 5th game when Serena broke and went on to lead 5-2. Sharapova held for 3-5 before Serena served out the set at 6-3. The Russian began the second set and again the American broke in the 5th game to lead 3-2 and, in a mirror image of the first set, she was the first to 5-2 and then broke again to take the set at 6-2 to book her place in Sunday’s final.
