Isner and Haas advance to San Jose quarter-finals

John Isner, Tommy Haas enter quarterfinal in San Jose, whilst Michael Russell advanced into second round where he will meet top seed Raonic.

Second seed American Isner overcame Vasek Pospisil of Canada in three sets in the second round of San Jose ATP tournament. Both players were serving excellently in the opening set, yet the Canadian was forced to defend a set ball when serving to stay in the opener at 6-5 for Isner. The set was ultimately decided in the tie-break where the US player achieved two mini-breaks to go one nil up. Isner then paid a price to lack of concentration in the second half of the set number two, allowing Pospisil to break him twice in a row and level the terms. World No. 16 American struggled for a while in the deciding set as well, but improved his performance towards the end of the match and broke his 130th-ranked opponent twice to progress into the quarterfinals with a 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3 triumph.

Experienced German Haas dealt with another Canadian Jesse Levine much easier and secured his quarterfinal ticket in less than an hour of tennis. One break of serve was enough to separate the players in the first set which Haas served out with a hold to love. The following set was a one-man show with German claiming a triple break and closing out the match with a 6-3, 6-1 final result.

The first round clash between unseeded Americans Donald Young and Michael Russell also ended in two sets. The opener was equal until Russel seized an eighth-game break and consolidated it by serving out the set. The set number two was an exhibition of lost serves – Young thus broke Russel for the third time to obtain a 5-3 advantage. Russell battled back though and claimed a straight sets victory after confirming his fourth break of the set. The score: 6-3, 7-5. Russell is meeting top seed Milos Raonic in the round of 16.
