Kvitova and Wozniacki reach Qatar Open 2013 third round

7th seed Petra Kvitova played her first match at the Doha tournament on Wednesday afternoon, having had a bye in the first round. She took on the hard hitting Russian leftie Ekaterina Makarova, who had easily taken out Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1 6-2 in the first round. Unfortunately, Makarova had to retire at the end of the first set, which Kvitova won 6-4. The Czech will meet Nadia Petrova in the 3rd round.

Svetlana Kuznetsova is quietly working her way back up the rankings after half a year off the tour with an injury. Now ranked at 51, she is playing some of her wonderful brand of tennis again. On Wednesday afternoon she played 9th seed Marion Bartoli who had had a real uphill battle against Francesca Sciavone in the first round, having been down 2-5 in the first set before taking the match 7-6 6-3. Kuznetsova had beaten the American qualifier, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, 7-6 6-4 in round 1. In this second round match Kuznetsova upended Bartoli 6-4 6-4 in an hour and a half to set up a meeting with 8th seed Sam Stosur.

Caroline Wozniacki, the tournament’s 10th seed, had an easy 6-2 6-1 win over Mervana Jugic-Salic in the first round to take her place in the second round against the tricky 31st ranked Romanian Sorana Cirstea, who had surprisingly been taken to three sets by 260th ranked Ons Jabeur of Tunisia in the first round. The tough first set against Cirstea went to a breaker, but the Dane made light work of the second set, taking it to love to move into the third round where she will meet Mona Barthel of Germany.
