Frenchman Michael Llodra upset the second seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia in the second round of the Open Sud de France, beating him in straight sets 6-3 7-6 (4).
After the Czech Berdych withdrew before the tournament start, Tipsarevic was the highest seed in the draw and was granted a first round bye.
The Frenchman’s serve and volley was working perfectly today, hitting 13 aces alltogether and not dropping his serve a single time. Despite Tipsarevic saving two break points in the 11th game of set two and forcing a tiebreak, he was unable to regroup, with Llodra eventually coming out on top.
In the quarter-finals, Llodra will play Jan Hajek of Czech Republic, who advanced to the last 8 of the tournament after his opponent Viktor Troicki of Serbia retired when trailing 6-0 4-2.
Also through to the next round is no.3 seed Richard Gasquet of France after eliminating fellow countryman Gael Monfils 6-3 2-6 6-3.
With this win, Gasquet levelled the head to head record against Monfils to 4-4 and will meet another French player, the 6th seeded Julien Benneteau in the quarters.
