Nadal wins second round match in Vina del Mar, Monaco out

It wasn’t quite vintage stuff from Rafael Nadal on his return from injury but he had far too much for qualifier Federico Delbonis in their second round affair, defeating the Argentinian 6-3 6-2. After surprisingly being broken in his first game, Nadal would recover from a 0-2 deficit by taking six of the next seven games on his way to winning the set with the decisive break coming in a marathon game eight on his fourth break point of the game.

Another lengthy game kicked off the second set and once more the Spaniard would eventually grind down Delbonis to put the match out of any doubt. A potential bagel looked on the cards when Nadal carved out a break point for a 5-0 lead but it would be avoided as the 22 year-old eventually held, closing out the game with an ace. Delbonis would force Nadal to serve out the match with another hold. A forehand went long on match point at 40-30, but he would seal the match at the second time of asking with a forehand down the line forcing the error wide from Delbonis.

Meanwhile, his doubles partner for the week Juan Monaco wasn’t so fortunate in his opening round tie. The second seed was surprisingly dumped out in straight sets by France’s Guillaume Rufin 7-6(3) 6-4. Despite breaking to start the match, Monaco found it far from easy as he twice faced multiple break points in two of his next three service games before holding. However, he would finally be broken on his seventh break point as he tried to serve out the set, failing to get himself out of a 0-40 hole. After both players held comfortably to seal a tie break, it would be Monaco who struck first only to hand straight back the mini break. Monaco would win just one point of the five on his serve in the tie break as he fell to a 7-3 defeat.

The second set would be settled by just the one break in game five, as Rufin broke to love to take control of the match. He had chances in Monaco’s next service to put the match beyond all doubt but would fail to do so. It wouldn’t matter though as Rufin delivered two easy holds to 15 to move into the quarter finals.
