Canada eliminates Spain in first round of Davis Cup

Milos Raonic helped Canadians move into the quarterfinals of Davis Cup 2013 as they eliminated Spain with 3-2. Canada will play Italy next.

A milestone victory for Canadian tennis players on hard court in Vancouver as their country entered the quarterfinal stage of Davis Cup for the first time. 15th-ranked rising star Raonic was a favorite in the match against World No. 51 Albert Ramos. The Spaniard might have claimed the opening set in a tie-break, yet Raonic was able to rely on his top drawer serving once again. He made it through the encounter without gifting his rival any break point chances, while creating enough of his own to close out the match in four sets with a 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 final result.

Frank Dancevic, ranked 166, picked up where his countryman had left off. 34th-ranked Marcel Granollers did not really get into the match and was ultimately swept away in straight sets after conceding two breaks in each of them. Dancevic doubled his team’s lead with a more than comfortable 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 victory.

The Spaniards started to see some light at the end of the tunnel after Granollers and Marc Lopez succeeded to turn around the doubles match on Saturday. They were trailing by a set at 1-2, but shifted into a higher gear in the last two sets and defeated Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-2 end score.

However, Spanish dreams of making it to the quarterfinals were transforming into a nightmare again as Raonic was putting in another dominant performance and crushed all Spanish hopes by dismissing Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in straight sets. His 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory after exactly two hours of play  meant the Vancouver crowd could begin celebrating a historic success.

In the last match of the tie Lopez prevailed over Dancevic in two sets: 7-5, 6-4, making the final result 3-2 in Canada’s favor.
