The unseeded but always dangerous 45th ranked Mona Barthel of Germany completed a great week at the Open GDF Suez tournament in Paris when she defeated the top seed, world number 7, the Italian Sara Errani, in straight sets 7-5 7-6 in the final played on Sunday afternoon. Both sets were extremely tight, each taking almost an hour to complete. In the first set, it came down to Barthel’s ability to convert her break points – eight out of nine, compared to the Italian’s one out of nine. Things were even closer in the second set, but Barthel scraped together a few more points on her serve – particularly on her second serve – than her opponent take the set to a breaker, which she won 7-4 for her second WTA singles title.

The doubles title match was between the first seeds, Errani and Roberta Vinci of Italy and the second seeds, Liesl Huber of the USA and Andrea Hlavachova of the Czech Republic, who had had two tough three setters to reach the final. The Italians had a three setter in the quarters but a walk over in the semis on their route to the final. Errani had a rest between her singles final and taking to the court for the doubles and she and her partner made quick work of finishing off their opponents 6-1 6-1 in just fifty minutes on court to take the title.
