Novak Djokovic prevailed in a five-set marathon against Wawrinka to advance into Australian Open QFs, while Tomas Berdych ousted Anderson in three sets.
Top seed Djokovic and 15th seed Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka battled hard for a quarterfinal ticket at Rod Laver Arena. The Serbian player overslept the opening set in which Wawrinka was simply superior in all elements of the game. He efficiently converted all of his break point chances and robbed Djokovic of three consecutive service games to conquer the set in twenty-six minutes. He then bounced back after conceding an early break in the second set and broke Nole twice by 3-1. Wawrinka was serving for a two set lead, but made a few unforced errors too many to hold back Djokovic as he was making his way back into the match. At that point long rallies usually finished with Wawrinka’s shots landing behind the baseline. The defending champ won four games in a row and it was one set a piece between them.
The crowd of 15,000 saw a break and a re-break at the beginning of the third set after which the game calmed down for a while. Some solid holds followed until the 27-year-old Swiss gave away a serve in the ninth game. Djokovic accepted the gift and took a lead after three sets. Wawrinka played incredibly well in the fourth set, Nole was hanging in there too, while the spectators could enjoy some amazing points in the process. Wawrinka had an initiative in the tie-breaker which he wrapped up after hitting an exceptional down-the-line forehand at the end of a breathtaking rally.
The Swiss used the momentum to open the decider with a break, yet he could not consolidate it and we were in for a never-ending final set. Wawrinka produced four break points in the ninth game, but wasted them all and was forced to hold his service games to stay in the tournament thereafter. He did so consistently until Djokovic generated his first match ball at 11-10. The Swiss replied by hitting a service winner down the middle and then saved another match ball with an outstanding backhand. Unfortunately for Wawrinka, Nole was invincible during the third match point, so he grabbed an epic 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 12-10 victory in the end.
In the other match unseeded South African Kevin Anderson, who knocked out Verdasco in the previous round, came nowhere close to repeating the success against fifth seed Czech Berdych. Anderson managed to respond to the first lost serve in the opener, yet he was broken again straight away. Berdych preserved his lead until the end of the set to go one nil up. He cruised through the second set with even less trouble, obtaining a double break lead and achieving a two set cushion. One break a piece in the early stages of the third set before Anderson wasted a set point at 5-4. A very intense tie-break followed in which the players generated four match points and four set points respectively. Berdych’s fifth match brought him luck – he progressed with a 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (3) final score.
