Tomic wins first ATP title, beats Anderson in Sydney final

Australian Bernard Tomic claimed his first ATP title as he defeated South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in the Sydney International 2013 final, prevailing in three sets 6-3 6-7 (2) 6-3.

He also became the first Australian player to win this tournament since Lleyton Hewitt managed to grab the trophy here in 2005.

The Sydney crowd was on their feet after the no.2 seed Tomic took his opponent’s serve in the second game and never looked back, wrapping up the first set in just 27 minutes.

Anderson made his opponent work a lot harder in set two, dominating on his serve and as the set went into a ‘breaker’, he kept his composure to force a decider.

Tomic looked the better player at the start of the third set, but wasn’t able to convert any of the three break point chances at the beginning of the set. However, after he took Anderson’s serve a few games later, nothing could stop him from capturing the Sydney title.

It will be interesting to see how Tomic, who should go up to no.43 in the rankings, will perform at the Australian Open, where he is set to face Federer in the second round.
