On the first leg of his South American tour of exhibitions, Roger Federer fell to Thomaz Bellucci in three sets in front of a packed Sao Paolo Crowd. While Federer clearly was not at his best, it was still a nice win for Bellucci, who would break in the final game of the match to seal the 7-5 3-6 6-4 victory.
Having took Federer to three sets twice on the season, Bellucci was full of confidence and showed it as he broke early. He would not be able to hold on to it as he was broken in the process of serving for the set on a double fault. He would break again at 5-5, but this time would hold his nerve to take a one set lead.
Federer upped his level in the second and would be rewarded with a 6-3 win to force the decider. When he broke in the first game of the final set, it looked like it would be plain sailing but Bellucci fought back to reel off three straight games and take a 3-1 lead. Bellucci was pegged back as Federer would get back on serve but there would be no coming back after a second break for a 4-2 lead. Bellucci served it out in the 10th game of the set to cap off an entertaining match.
Earlier in the evening, home favourites Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares had been defeated by the Number 1 doubles pair Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, 6-3 3-6 6-3.
All the matches are being streamed on Youtube, with matches against Juan Martin Del Potro, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Tommy Haas also scheduled. Also scheduled for dates on the tour are Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Caroline Wozniacki amongst other players.
