Ferrer defeats Tipsarevic in last group match of ATP Finals

A Pyrrhic victory for David Ferrer who beat Janko Tipsarevic at ATP Finals 2012 in London, yet he finished third in the group B.

Fourth seed Ferrer claimed his second win at ATP World Tour Finals, but failed to reach semis nonetheless. Eight-seeded Serb Tipsarevic, who had been unable to win a set in his previous two matches, was the more adventurous of the players in the opener as he conceded a higher number of unforced errors, but scored more winners than the Spaniard. Both players were rather wasteful with their service games, so the set ended with five breaks in total. Tipsarevic thus served for the set at 5-4 and needed to save a break point before moving one nil up.

Ferrer bounced back quickly, achieved a 3-0 advantage in the following set, yet the Serb broke back to make it 3-2. However, he struggled again in the sixth game and ultimately suffered another service loss. Although clearly frustrated, Tipsarevic made it 5-3 with the help of some strong first serves. It was too late for a comeback though as the Spaniard opened the next game with two aces, created a double set point and leveled the terms straight away thanks to Tipsarevic’s return error.

In the decider Ferrer, a seven-time ATP champion in 2012, fended off a break point to avoid falling 0-2 behind, and there was no way of stopping him after that. He created a safe two break distance between him and Tipsarevic by 5-1 and continued to turn the screw in the helpless Serb’s next service game. A couple of match balls were soon to follow and Ferrer capped off his brilliant third set performance with a well executed forehand winner. Break, set and a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 triumph for the 30-year-old Spaniard who will be disappointed over his London exit, but he might find solace in helping his country conquering Davis Cup next weekend.
