Juan Martin del Potro defeated Roger Federer for the second time in a row, prevailing in three sets 7-6 (3) 4-6 6-3 in the third group match of the ATP World Tour Finals 2012.

With this win, the Argentine booked his place in the Sunday’s semis. The only question that remains, who will top the group, will it be him of Federer? This should be decided in the evening match between Ferrer and Tipsarevic.

As both players held their serves all the way till the end in set one, a tiebreak was to decide the outcome of it. Unfortunately for the Swiss, he went down two mini breaks to give Delpo a 4-1 lead. The Argentine never looked back and converting his third set point to take a lead in the match.

But the Swiss maestro fought right back as he took Del Potro’s serve in the opening game of the second set, breaking him to love. It proved to be the only break in the set, with Federer forcing a decider as he served it out with a hold to 30, firing two aces at the end.

However, Federer’s very slow start and Delpo’s aggressive game earned the Argentine a 3-0 lead in the decider. This one break of serve was sufficient for the Basel champion to capture the set and qualify for the semis with his second group win. The biggest problem for the Swiss in this set was his backhand that misfired way too often, handing the Argentine quite a few cheap points. But all credit to Del Potro, who once again showed that he can be a contender for the title here.
