Simon beats Berdych, will face Janowicz in Paris semis

Gilles Simon defeated 5th seeded Tomas Berdych in today’s Paris Masters 2012 quarterfinal match, prevailing in straight sets 6-4 6-4 and improving his head to head record against the Czech to 5-2.

One break of serve in the first set was more than sufficient for Simon to take a lead in the match. As the Frenchman took Berdych’s serve in the fifth game for a 3-2 lead, he never looked back and closed out the set on his own serve.

But the Czech player, who won this event in 2005 (beating Ljubicic in the final), managed to break Simon at the start of the second set and had some more chances to go two breaks up for a 4-0 lead. Unfortunately for Berdych, he couldn’t capitalise and Simon fought his way back into the set with the help of the home crowd. As he was serving for the match at 5-4 up, he saved another three break points from 0-40 down to book a place in the semifinals.

Simon will play the big surprise of the tournament, Polish qualifier Jerzy Janowicz, who advanced into the semis after his opponent Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia was forced to retire at 3-6 6-1 4-1 in the Pole’s favour. The Serb was two breaks down in the third set when he called for the trainer. A few moments later he indicated that he was unable to continue in the match, which the French crowd didn’t seem to like that much.
