Robson and Lucic through to 2nd round in Osaka, Shvedova out

Laura Robson, Mirjana Lucic and Tamarine Tanasugarn entered second round at HP Japan Women’s Open in Osaka. Ffith seed Shvedova was eliminated.

Eighth-seeded British tennis hope Robson is past her first hurdle at the Osaka WTA tournament. Experienced Greek Eleni Daniilidou generated more break points in the opening set, but was the one giving away a break in the end. The British teenager first wrapped up the opener and acquired a two break advantage to go 3-0 up in set two. Daniilidou pulled one back and was close to making up for the double break deficit, yet recent Guangzhou runner-up Robson has proved to be the mentally stronger of the athletes on this day as she restored her previous double break lead at 5-2. She served out the match with a comfortable hold to secure a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Her next opponent will be Chinese Ji Mao.

The Japanese crowd witnessed a surprise exit of the fifth seed Kazakh Yaroslava Shvedova who fell to her Thai opponent Tanasugarn in straight sets. 133rd-ranked Tanasugarn held all of her serves in the opener while getting hold of a three break points package in the sixth game. She broke Shvedova straight away and never looked back. Her performance did not drop a bit in the following set as she moved 5-1 up, putting the match beyond any doubt. Two games later she could celebrate her deserved 6-3, 6-2 triumph. She will take on American Jamie Hampton in round two.

Two-time ATP winner Lucic of Croatia turned around her first round Osaka match against 19-year-old Thai Luksika Kumkhum. Lucic could not recover from a 5-1 deficit in the opener, but capitalized on her only converted break point in the second set to level the match at one set apiece. She could not consolidate her first break in the decider, but grabbed another one to steal the three-setter in little less than two hours with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 final result.  Lucic is going to play seventh-seeded Scheepers in round two.
