Veteran Slovak Daniela Hantuchova, now ranked at number 38 (her highest ranking was number 5 at the beginning of 2003) took on the German number 2 who is number 19 in the WTA rankings and the 5th seed in this tournament, Julia Goerges.  The first set was very tightly fought, with Goerges taking it 6-4, mainly because of her four aces and heavy ground strokes that penetrated Hantuchova’s defence. The second set saw both players go toe to toe with each other all the way to a tie breaker, with Goerges taking it 7-5 to advance into the second round of the Generali Ladies Linz tournament with a 6-4 7-6 (5) end result. Her next opponent will be Romina Oprandi of Switzerland.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands, the 23rd ranked American and number 201 on the WTA rankings list, had to qualify for the main draw at the Generali Ladies Linz tournament being played in this pretty Austrian city this week. She beat Karolina Pliskova, 4th seed Sesil Karatantcheva and 5th seed Ksenia Pervak in the qualies to earn the right to play against the 7th seedeed player in the main draw, Austria’s own Tamira Paszek, who is at a career high of number 27. On paper this looked like a sitter for the Austrian, especially as Mattek-Sands, who was ranked at number 30 in July of 2011, has hardly played this year because of a string of injuries, but she sprung a surprise on Paszek with superior service stats, including two aces to the Austrian’s five double faults, which were key to her 6-2 6-4 win in just over an hour and a half.  She will next face Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain.
