Federer demolishes Benneteau, moves into third round at the Olympics

Roger Federer made sure not to repeat his marathon match against Julien Benneteau from Wimbledon this year, when he had to fight back from two sets down to win the match.

In the second round of the 2012 London Olympics, the Swiss destroyed his French opponent in merely and hour, prevailing in straigth sets 6-2  6-2.

Federer came racing out of the boxes, breaking Benneteau in the second game of the first set. He then never looked back, taking the Frenchman’s serve three more times without facing a break point himself.

The 17 time Grand Slam champion crushed Benneteau, firing  seven aces and 24 winners and booked a third round encounter against the winner of the match between Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan and Gilles Muller of Luxembourg.

These are the fourth Olympic Games for the Swiss maestro and he is seeking to win his first singles gold medal.

In the remaining first round matches, Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus eliminated Japanese Go Soeda in three sets 6-7 (6)  7-6 (5)  6-2 and Juan Monaco of Argentina overcame Belgian David Goffin 6-4  6-1.
