Djokovic eliminated in Olympic doubles, Tsonga past the first round

Eight-seeded Serbs Djokovic and Troicki suffered a two-set loss against Swedish couple Brunstrom/Lindstedt in the first round of men’s doubles Olympic tournament. The Swedes won the first set in a tie-break, and the second one was decided after the Serbs gave away their serve for the only time in the match. Final result: 7-6 (8), 6-3 for Brunstrom and Lindstedt who will play Croats Cilic and Dodig in the next round. They beat Colombian pair Cabal/Giraldo with 6-3, 6-4. Djokovic, on the other hand, can now save some strength for his singles matches.

Second-seeded French Tsonga and Llodra dealt easily enough with Argentine pair Nalbandian/Schwank. One converted break point per each of the two sets did the trick, and the favorites were through after one hour and fourteen minutes of play: 6-3, 7-5. Their second-round opponents will be Indian veteran Paes and his compatriot Vardhan who won a three-set clash against Dutch pair Haase/Rojer with the end score 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-2.

Murray brothers disappointed the home spectators as they did not make it to the second round despite taking the first set against Austrians Melzer and Peya. A tie-break was played in the second set, but the British were constantly on a back foot and allowed the Austrians to equalize. The latter had better nerves in the last set. They had to broke back Murrays’ serves twice, and ultimately made their comeback complete with grabbing yet another break in the last game of the match. The result: 5-7, 7-6 (6), 7-5. Their next opponents are Spaniards Ferrer and Lopez. They booked their ticket for the second round after winning a 7-6 (7), 6-7 (6), 8-6 marathon against fourth-seeded Polish pair Fyrstenberg/Matkowski.

Americans Roddick and Isner dropped out of the tournament without causing their Brazilian rivals Melo and Soares much trouble – the match was over in fifty minutes: 6-2, 6-4. The Brazilians are waiting for the outcome of the rescheduled Berdych/Stepanek vs.Bracciali/Seppi clash to find out their next opponent.
