Querrey defeats Ram in LA semis, plays Berankis in final

Second seed Sam Querrey beat his unseeded American compatriot Rajeev Ram for the third time in a row and proceeded into 2012 Farmers Classic final, where he will be battling to complete a treble of Los Angeles ATP trophies.

World No. 117 Ram was in a good form this week. In the semifinal match, he had a break point in the third game of the first set, but his rival was able to defend it. Querrey then used the momentum, took Ram’s serve in the following game, and went 3-1 up. There were no more break point opportunities in the set which thus ended with 6-3 after Querrey held to love in the last game. Querrey had a 63% first serve percentage against Ram’s 48%, while he was also more successful in winning both serve as well as return points.

In the beginning of the second set, Ram looked like he could make a comeback as he broke 57th-ranked Querrey’s serve and took a 3-0 lead. The second-seeded player, however, stayed focused enough to win all of his remaining serves and broke back by converting one of his six break points of the set; the tie-break followed. Querrey, who hit eight aces in the second set as opposed to Ram’s three (overall: 11-4), ultimately managed to capitalize on grabbing the only mini-break point in the thirteenth game, and wrapped up a match: 6-3, 7-6 (4)

Only unseeded Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis still stands beetween Querrey and his third Los Angeles title.
