Del Potro victorious against Berdych in Paris, plays Federer in QFs

Argentine Juan Martin del Potro only needed one more set to win against Tomas Berdych in a match that started yesterday, but got suspended because of darkness. Del Potro managed to wrap it up today and eliminated the no.7 seed Czech, winning 7-6 (6)  1-6  6-3  7-5.

The last meeting between these two players happened this year at the Madrid Open, where Berdych came out on top, defeating the Argentine for a final place.

But the conditions were slightly different this time around, the Paris clay being quite a bit slower than the fast blue clay in Madrid.

Del Potro won the crucial first set tiebreak, but it didn’t seem to bother Berdych too much. The Czech managed to take his opponent’s serve twice in set 2 and the match was back on track. Both players came up with some heavy hitting, but it was the Argentine once again, who just got the edge in the third set and closed it out just before the match got due to bad light.

The no.9 seed Argentine started strongly when the encounter resumed today, taking a quick 4-1 lead. Despite Berdych rallying back to level the score, Del Potro took the Czech’s serve to love when Berdych serving to stay in the match and booked his place in the quarterfinals.

Del Potro will play the Swiss Roger Federer for a place in the semis.

Also through to the last 8 is no.12 seed Spaniard Nicolas Almagro after a comfortable win against Serbian Janko Tipsarevic, prevailing in straight sets 6-4  6-4  6-4. He was joined by another Spaniard, no.6 seed David Ferrer, who destroyed his countryman Marcel Granollers, allowing him only five games on his way to a 6-3  6-2  6-0 victory.
