These two players are used to making it to the top of the rankings for their tennis wins and achievements, but they were granted a new honour this week as they, and three of their fellow female tennis players, were featured in the 2012 Forbes’ Top 100 list of the world’s most powerful celebrities. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were some of the highest ranked sports players and athletes to make the list, with Federer being the highest ranked at number 31 and Nadal not too far behind at number 47. Widely considered to be one of the greatest professional tennis players in the history of the sport, Federer can now add an “impressive endorsement portfolio in sports” to his list of achievements thanks to his nine sponsors, which earn the Swiss tennis ace more than $30 million during each tennis season. With sponsors including Nike, Wilson and Rolex, as well as exhibition fees in excess of $1 million, it’s surprising that’s it’s taken this long for him to be included on this well-known power list. Nadal, another great player and someone who “has established himself as one of the top tennis players of all-time”, has managed to generate $48 million in career prize money as well as an expansive portfolio of endorsements and sponsors. Becoming the first professional tennis player to win consistently at the same tournament for 8 years in a row when he won the Monte Carlo Masters title in April, Nadal’s already high profile has rocketed recently thanks to his outstanding achievements. The ‘Celebrity 100’ list includes actors (both film and TV), athletes, models, authors, musicians, comedians and TV personalities. Inclusion onto the list is based around media visibility – such column inches and TV, radio and online exposure – and entertainment-based earnings.
