In another bizarre day at the United States Open, second seed Simona Halep fell in straight sets to an inspired Mirjana Lucic-Baroni. Halep’s aspirations of usurping the No. 1 ranking from Serena Williams came crashing down on Friday afternoon when she lost to Lucic-Baroni 7-6, 6-2. I expected a really tough match. I didn’t think about anything except following the tactics and playing the way I was supposed to play. I was able to do that; it’s incredible.” It was a surprising result considering Halep had a 5-2 lead in the opening set before losing to Lucic-Baroni in a tiebreaker. The wheels came off soon after and she lost the second set 6-2. “She played really well today. I mean, after I had 5-2 and the two set points, she came back really well and she started to hit every ball. Everything was in for her. It wasn’t my best day, but still I did everything I could on court.
