Carlos Alcaraz vs Sebastian Baez US Open 2022 Preview

With no Novak Djokovic at this year’s event, there will be a group of players who will think their chances of winning the title have somewhat increased. Amongst them will be Carlos Alcaraz, who will look to build an on and already great season so far. The Spaniard was a quarter-finalist last year, his best run so far in an already impressive but early career. Sebastian Baez is his first opponent in what should be a kind warmup.

Despite his best efforts before coming to North America, Baez only just missed out on a seeding for this event. Like many of his countrymen, the Argentinian is much more comfortable on clay – with eight finals (four won) contributing to in the past 12 months propelling him to a career high of No. 31 just a few weeks back. Since moving to hard courts, he has been found wanting although a trio of Nick Kyrgios, Sebastian Korda and Taylor Fritz is not the kindest of draws.

Alcaraz is still not 100% confident on hard courts but is improving at such a rate he will have no issues soon enough. For a top 10 player, his choice to play two clay court tournaments after Wimbledon has to be questioned even if he did make two finals in the process. He lost his opener in Canada before making the quarters in Cincy, falling in three sets to Cameron Norrie.

Last year’s quarter finalist is in a section of the draw that should allow him to repeat this but will need to be fully prepared in the latter part of this week. Alcaraz’s is learning to adapt his game to the different surfaces very quickly so there should be no teething problems against an opponent who only plays the bare minimum on hard courts. He may well be looking ahead to round three with the in-form Borna Coric a potential opponent there.

Prediction – Carlos Alcaraz in three sets
