Iga Swiatek looks to continue her outrageous winning streak on Tuesday afternoon, opening her Wimbledon outing with a Centre Court appearance against Jana Fett. The World No.1 was chosen as the player to begin play due to the retirement of Ashleigh Barty, who would have traditionally played in this spot as defending champion.
Fett is in her first slam since Wimbledon 2018 having won three tough matches to earn her spot in the draw. Currently ranked outside the top 250, she remains a long way from the top 100 which she momentarily breached in 2017. She is most known for her match with Caroline Wozniacki at the Australian Open the following year, where her failure to close out a 5-1 40-15 lead was the impetus for the Dane to win her first slam.
Swiatek comes into the tournament with no matchplay on grass, a potentially questionable move for someone with little experience on the surface at pro level. “Honestly, I still feel like I need to figure out grass, last year for sure, it was that kind of tournament where I didn’t know what to expect. Then match by match I realized maybe I can do more and more.” she said.
One more win would see her surpass Venus Williams’ 35 match winning streak and she should be able to build further on that with a fairly routine draw even if she is below par early on. As with many lesser players against Swiatek, it really does feel like a matter of how many games for her opponents. There have been bagels and breadsticks aplenty for her during her winning streak and it will be no surprise if the Pole’s return to the big stage delivers at least one more.
Prediction – Iga Swiatek in straight sets
