On paper, one of the Sunday highlights in the women’s draw has to be the matchup between Simona Halep and Coco Gauff. It will be the second meeting of their career with the Romanian winning the first matchup, ending the dream run of Gauff at Wimbledon back in 2019.
Halep is seeking a quick to the Top 20, having fallen thanks to an injury-hit 2021. She toughed out a three set win against Ekaterina Alexandrova with a fairly clean performance, hitting almost three times less unforced errors than the Russian. “I remember the matches against her and that they’re never easy because she’s playing flat and she’s strong, and I’m happy that I could win this match. I think I did what I had to do, but I’m just looking forward to the next one to play a little bit better.” she said afterwards.
Gauff moved to 8-5 on the year after beating Claire Liu in straight sets. It was a strong returning performance in the 6-1 7-6 win with Gauff creating fifteen break point chances in total, taking four of them across the two sets. One point of concern will be though her eight double faults, something that Halep will be bound to take advantage of if it continues.
Gauff’s losses generally come to players with better credentials and Halep definitely fits the bill for this one. The Romanian looks to be returning to form and with a new coaching partnership just beginning, there will be plenty of work going into this one.
Prediction – Simiona Halep in straight sets
