Petra Kvitova vs Maria Sakkari Indian Wells 2022 Preview

Share & Comment

The women’s tournament has been something of a bloodbath so far with a maximum of four the starting top 12 seeds competing in the fourth round at Indian Wells. Petra Kvitova will hope to make that one less with victory against Maria Sakkari but will need to improve to move past her Greek opponent.

Kvitova had it far tougher than she would have liked in her opener here, needing two and a half hours to eventually beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-7 6-4 6-4. Having held set point twice in the opener, she will be ruing the missed chances to likely see this one off sooner. She will be happy with the last two sets where once up a break at *2-1 and *1-0 respectively, service games were mostly comfortable.

Sakkari does continue to go under the radar a great deal, especially for someone ranked at No. 6. Two deep slam runs have helped a lot but the Greek does need to pick up a big title eventually, having won just one WTA title so far. She beat Katerina Siniakova in straight sets to advance, breaking the Czech four times overall.

The head to head currently stands at 3-3 and 2-2 on hard courts with the most recent match being a comfortable straight sets win for Sakkari at the US Open last year. Kvitova will struggle to keep up with the Greek if she is at her usual solid and dependable level and if this goes three, Sakkari should also be better suited to a long match.

Prediction – Maria Sakkari in straight sets
