Iga Swiatek vs Viktoria Golubic Miami 2022 Preview

One win is all Iga Swiatek needs to become the World No.1 after Ashleigh Barty’s shock retirement announcement. The Pole would be the fitting heir to Barty having been in great form all year. She will play Viktoria Golubic for a spot in the third round, an opponent she has already beaten once this year.

Golubic was the first win in Swiatek’s 11 match winning streak, which has spanned Doha and Indian Wells. It was one of the tougher matches during her run and the only three setter where she lost the second set. Her performances at Indian Wells got better as the tournament went on and her 6-1 6-4 victory against Maria Sakkari in the final was especially impressive as the conditions did look to favour the Greek.

Golubic can be a tough out on her day but her inability to play high level offensive tennis consistently means she is yet to break into the top 30. She needed three sets to beat Kirsten Flipkens, something that doesn’t bode well for her chances against the future No.1.

Swiatek already has proven she has the star power and the ability to follow Ashleigh Barty as No.1. A strong run at Miami will help a lot in terms of ensuring that is not a short stay. Nullifying the threat of Golubic should not be too much of an issue for Pole who has beaten much tougher versions of her style in the past month. She will need to adapt to the conditions in Miami though with the switch often meaning that the Sunshine Double is a very difficult achievement to complete.

Prediction – Iga Swiatek in straight sets
