Iga Swiatek looks to continue her winning streak on Tuesday when she takes on Angelique Kerber for a spot in the quarter-finals at Indian Wells. Swiatek is the current favourite to win the tournament having already won the first WTA 1000 event of the year in Doha.
Swiatek’s win over Clara Tauson in the previous round was a near copy of her opening match of the tournament. She lost a tight opening set to the Dane before blowing her away in the final two sets for an easy victory in the end, 6-7 6-2 6-1. “I think you have to put pressure on her too because she likes being aggressive as well and playing fast, and her hand is pretty strong. I feel like she was hitting full power sometimes when I didn’t put much pressure on her. So I need[ed] to do that.” she said afterwards.
2019 finalist Kerber eased through her match against Daria Kasatkina, putting in a clean performance to overwhelm the Russian 6-2 6-1. She dealt with the windy conditions much better, breaking at will while also being thankful for an error-filled performance from her opponent.
“She tries to play more aggressive so she has everything that you need to have for a top player. So I think it will be a really tough match, but also it’s great to have a match against a top player that I’m playing for the first time. It’s not happening so often.” Kerber said on this matchup. The German can mix it with the top players on occasions still but Swiatek is the form player right now. A sloppy start may be more likely to be punished but the Pole should be able to hit through a Kerber who isn’t consistently the elite defender she used to be.
Prediction – Iga Swiatek in straight sets
