Leylah Fernandez is looking to emulate Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Garbine Muguruza by going back to back as champion at the Monterrey Open. Standing in her way will be Camila Osorio, who is competing in her third WTA final.
Osorio ensured there was no flop in the semi finals following her wild comeback against Elina Svitolina in the previous round. Having came from *4-1 down in the deciding set against Svitolina, she had it much easier against Nuria Parrizas Diaz in the semis. She was broken four times in her 6-4 6-4 win against the Spaniard but looked very strong on return.
Fernandez has dropped just one set on her way to the final and has looked very much the part of a top seed. The Canadian has only been broken four times across four matches and would not be broken in her 6-1 6-4 victory over Beatriz Haddad Maia. “I just enjoy playing tennis in front of fans who love the sport as much as I do,” Fernandez said after the match. “They cheer me on, they cheer my opponents on, in tough moments the energy on court is so positive.”
This week has been a welcome return to form for Fernandez, who was last seen losing a first round match in Australia to a home wildcard. This should be a fairly straight forward win for an inform Fernandez, who will be able to pick her spots against a player that might not offer enough offensively to take it to the Canadian. Osorio will also be far more vulnerable on serve and not be able to dictate as much as she did against Parrizas Diaz.
Prediction – Leylah Fernandez in straight sets
