While the women’s draw falls apart, the Men’s draw at the Miami Open has been fairly calm with just two of the Top 10 players losing through three rounds. Alexander Zverev will be looking to ensure that doesn’t get an addition when he takes to court in the evening session against Mackenzie McDonald, an opponent he is already 2-0 against.
McDonald has a well rounded game and could be ready to make a run for the top 30 this year if he continues. He was 2021 ATP Comeback Player of The Year award and should pass his current career high of No. 49 fairly soon. He was dominant in his last match to get here, not giving up a single break point in beating Grigor Dimitrov 6-1 6-4.
Once a finalist in Miami, Zverev was looking for his first match win at the event since that 2018 run. He toughed out a three set against Borna Coric, possibly not the best performance against an opponent who is playing just his second match after a year out. The German did improve in the decider though, breaking early and taking control from there as Coric faltered.
McDonald does have the game to spring a shock on Zverev – he serves and moves well but may not be able to keep it up long enough with the German from the baseline. However, Zverev’s may be in a post-Acapulco funk with his few ATP matches so far leaving a lot to be desired. This one could go the distance before he ups his level.
Prediction – Alexander Zverev in three sets
