Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Matteo Berrettini Wimbledon 2021 QF Preview

While most are focused on the projected final of Novak Djokovic vs Roger Federer, two very interesting quarter-finals await us to decide who most likely gets their crack at the two greats. On Federer’s side, it will be either Matteo Berrettini or Felix Auger-Aliassime who will be waiting in the semi-final. It would be Berrettini’s second slam semi-final while Auger-Aliassime had not made the last eight prior to this fortnight.

Berrettini was probably seen as one of the more trusted top eight seeds aside from the obvious two and booked his quarter final place with the minimum fuss. He has dropped just one set through four matches although it is fair to say he hasn’t had the toughest of draws so far. The Italian has a booming serve and big forehand to match, using it to full advantage on the grass. He is now on a nine match winning streak having won the Queens Club title prior to Wimbledon.

Auger-Aliassime avoided a lengthy affair with Nick Kyrgios in round three, something that probably helped him last the distance with Alexander Zverev in their Monday afternoon thriller. He was in danger of a completely meltdown having led 2-0 in sets but serving issues plagued the German in the deciding set of the 6-4 7-6 3-6 3-6 6-4 win. “This match really had everything. I had to dig deep physically and mentally. Of course, it makes it even sweeter.”

On grass, Berrettini has to be considered the best of the rest now. He probably has the most suited game to grass and mentally seems a more reliable prospect than his opponent that while undoubtedly talented, still is very streaky at times. The Italian will be eager to have another crack at Federer assuming the Swiss gets there. He was swatted aside with the minimum of fuss two years ago, winning just five games in a straight sets loss.

Prediction – Matteo Berrettini in four sets
