Once again on Centre Court, Coco Gauff will hope to pick up her best win at Wimbledon so far. The 17 year-old can establish herself further as a legitimate contender for the tournament by picking up a win over the 2018 champion, Angelique Kerber. It was two years ago that Gauff announced herself on the big stage with a fourth round run, beginning with her defeat of Venus Williams in round one.
Kerber feels like a legitimate threat again out of nowhere, having followed up her Bad Homburg title with a second week appearance here. She looked poor early in her third round win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich but was unstoppable in the second two sets, dropping just one game between them. “I played very well the last few weeks on grass. It’s great being back here in Wimbledon, especially reaching now the second week. This is always a goal when you start a Grand Slam.” she said after.
Gauff’s multiple Centre Court appearances have drawn some ire but she has already become a fan favourite at such a young age. She is yet to drop a set this fortnight with the latest win coming against Kaja Juvan in straight sets. She has been developing well and does look at home on the grass, with her two straight fourth rounds at such a young age looking very impressive on a surface that many struggle with in the earlier stages of her career.
“She’s really putting all the effort she has in every single match so I know that it will be tough, I know that I have to play some of my best tennis against her. This is the goal, to go out there and try to focus on me.” Kerber said of her young opponent. Kerber can definitely win this one but is going to have to work hard against a young and sprightly opponent, who defends well but has enough power to put the German on the back foot. Gauff thrives on the big stage so should not be overawed by the occasion where many others would.
Prediction – Coco Gauff in three sets
