Tournament favourite Simona Halep looks to secure her place in the quarter-finals on Sunday but will have a tough test against the rising Pole Iga Swiatek. Halep will be hoping for a repeat of their meeting at last year’s event, where she crushed Swiatek 6-1 6-0 in 45 minutes at the same stage. The winner of this one will play either Kiki Bertens or Martina Trevisan.

2018 Wimbledon Girls’ champion has been tipped as a future slam winner by many, boasting plenty of power and variety to boot. She set out her stall in round one with a crushing victory over last year’s losing finalist Marketa Vondrousova before following it up with two more straight sets wins over Su Wei Hsieh and Eugenie Bouchard.
Halep’s winning streak was extended to 17 on Friday after she avenged her French Open loss from last year against Amanda Anisimova. She would not be taken by surprise again, taking the game to her opponent in a dominant 6-0 6-1 win. “I took the game in my hands,” said Halep. “Last year, I was very far from the court, and I played fairly short so [Anisimova] could play her game. When she has time and she has the ball in the right position, she is very, very dangerous and she plays great. So today I think I did a great job changing a little bit the tactic.”
Swiatek is undoubtedly one to watch in the future and does hold enough power to overwhelm Halep if she is at her very best. However, the Pole has been found wanting when taking on the top players. She was dealt with by Victoria Azarenka fairly easy in New York and might find it tough against a similarly consistent counterpuncher here. She should be in a better mindset than the same matchup last year, something she recognised later as a big issue. “I didn’t even know that I was so stressed playing…then after I lost, I was pretty mad that I couldn’t show my best tennis, but I realised that it was just stress, and that I can work through it.” she said about that match.
