Alexander Zverev vs Jannik Sinner French Open 2020 Preview and Prediction

Probably the most interesting of the men’s fourth round matches, the highly touted Jannik Sinner faces off against Alexander Zverev for a place in the quarter-finals in Paris. Sinner is nearing a spot in the top 50 before he finishes his teens, an impressive feat in an era where there are few breakthroughs at such a young age.

Zverev is showing few signs of a US Open hangover, winning two of his three matches in straight sets so far. He beat former semi finalist Marco Cecchinato, backing in large part by a strong serving performance. He was broken just once in the win and won 85% of points on his first serve. “I am definitely much happier with my game [than against Herbert]. I worked on a few things yesterday. I was very unsatisfied with myself two days ago, but I still won,” said Zverev on court. “So that was more important. I know that with every round I have to play better and better, otherwise I will not have a chance.”

Sinner has won a lot of plaudits in his short time on the tour, with an attractive attacking game that continues to improve with every tournament. He already has two top 10 wins, most recently beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in Rome. He was barely challenged by 11th seed David Goffin in round one, the first of three straight sets wins this week.

The Italian continues to improve, showing few signs of nerves that other young players may suffer with in their first appearances on the big stage. Zverev’s consistency in the best of five format looks to be much improved while he has managed to pull off the comeback in many of his recent slow starts. He will have to be quick out the blocks against Sinner, who will have no qualms about taking it to Zverev – especially if the German is too passive in the early stages.  “[He is] somebody who has a lot of power. We will see how the match goes, but I feel like I am playing better and maybe I have a little more experience. But the young guys, they have no fear, no reason to be nervous, so it can go both ways.” Zverev said.

Prediction – Jannik Sinner in five sets
