It’s a far from glamorous quarter-final match up for a grand slam but there’s no doubt that both Yulia Putintseva and Jennifer Brady have a huge opportunity this fortnight.

With her win over Petra Martic, Putintseva is in a slam quarter final for the third time in her career. This run is her deepest outside of Roland Garros and two rounds better than her previous best in New York. She worked Martic hard through out the match and would eventually close it out 6-3 2-6 6-4, avoiding a complete collapse from 5-1 up in the decider. “Before the third set, I said to myself, ‘Whatever happens, you just make it difficult for her. You’re not going to do any mistakes. You’re going to move her around the court as much as possible and just do your best point by point.’ That’s what help me a lot today, this mindset,” Putintseva said on her performance.
Brady is one of the most improved players on the tour at the moment, working her powerful groundstrokes to full effect once more in victory over Angelique Kerber in round four. She hit 25 winners to just 14 unforced errors and in a terrific display against the German, winning 6-1 6-4 in the end. It continues an impressive return to the tour with Brady already having a Lexington title to her name post-lockdown. “Physically and mentally, I think I have improved on both aspects,” said Brady. “I have gotten a lot fitter. I’m able to maintain my intensity from the beginning of the match all the way until the end. Also going out there, I think having that physicality that I have, the improvement of my fitness I also have, that brings also the improvement of the mental side as well.”
This one should be a clash of styles with the nimble Putintseva a menace around the court who will seek to wear out the heavy hitting Brady. The American is in top form right now and will fancy her chances of overpowering her weaker opponent, especially having proven herself against a player of the calibre of Kerber in the previous round. “She’s a really good player, even though we played a long time ago, I think two, three years ago, she was already, like, having a good game style, moving a lot and taking forehand, big serve. I think I just need to focus on my game and prepare for a good match.” Putintseva said on her opponent.
