Stefanos Tsitsipas will look to continue his march through the early rounds at the US Open on Wednesday, taking on Maxime Cressy for a spot in round three. It is the first main draw for the Frenchman, who was a top college player prior to turning professional. Borna Coric is the likely opponent for the winner with the 27th seed expected to beat Juan Ignacio Londero.

It’s no surprise that 6ft7in Cressy was an NCAA champion in doubles with his booming serve and huge forehand but the Frenchman has transitioned to the tour very well in both singles and doubles. He looks likely to be a top 100 player sooner rather than later with his progress so far on the tour, which includes two Challenger titles in the past 18 months.

It was as straight forward as expected for Tsitsipas in his opener, dropping just four games in a dominant win over Albert Ramos Vinolas. The Greek barely dropped a point on first serve and was dominant on return, breaking seven times overall. “I was able to get my returns really deep, which gave me a psychological advantage in the match.” he said of the key to such an easy victory for him.

Tsitsipas’ run to the semi final in the Western & Southern Open suggests he should not have too much trouble against Cressy. He defeated three players even taller than the Frenchman to get there, coping well against the serves of Kevin Anderson, Reilly Opelka and John Isner. He should have little trouble against what will be an inferior version of these players at this stage of Cressy’s career.

Prediction – Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets
