Two of the game’s brightest younger male talents face off on Friday in what could be fascinating affair if both bring their best level. Stefanos Tsitsipas will be favoured to defeat Borna Coric but it is a great opportunity for both players with an unseeded opponent standing in the way of the winner and the quarter-finals.

Tsitsipas performed well against Maxime Cressy and the old-school style of the Frenchman. He dealt impressively with the contest net rushing of Cressy, who played 92 points in total at the net. After saving set point in the first set, Tsitsipas pushed on and broke one in each of the next two for a 7-6 6-3 6-4 victory. “His game is very unorthodox to be honest with you. You don’t have players like this on Tour,” Tsitsipas said. “He’s a rare species of a tennis player, that’s what he is.”

Coric had fallen back a bit after an impressive 2018, not quite pushing on in the way many expected in 2019. A strong run in New York would go some way to convincing many that good things are to come for the 12 months but he will need to improve on the standard shown in his second round victory over Juan Ignacio Londero. He had to come from 1-2 down to beat the Argentinian, who remains a far stronger player on clay.

After defeating a lofty serve and volleyer in the previous round, Tsitsipas will face a completely different test in the defensive and athletic skills of Coric. Tsitsipas is performing well right now and should have enough to see off the Croatian as he seeks to further improve on his career best at the US Open.

Prediction – Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets
