Two of the top players from the next generation in the men’s game will face off on Monday with tenth seed Andrey Rublev facing Matteo Berrettini for a spot in the quarter-finals. Berrettini owes much of his high ranking to a semi final run in New York last year while Rublev’s career best at a slam also came at the US Open, making the quarter finals in 2017.

Berrettini had a slow start to building on his year end top 8 ranking with just one tournament played either side of the tour suspension. He lost his second match at both the Australian Open and the Western & Southern Open but has looked in much better spirits this week. Much of this can be put down to his strong serving stats, where has averaged sixteen aces per match and has saved all break points faced so far. In round three, he broke four times overall to see off Casper Ruud 6-4 6-4 6-2.
A less volatile Rublev was showing great signs on court prior to the lockdown, beginning the season with two consecutive titles before a fourth round loss to Alexander Zverev in Melbourne. He lost his return match to Dan Evans but has looked dominant in three overwhelming victories this week. The last of them came against Salvatore Caruso where he secured two bagels in a straight sets win. “I was quite happy with my performance today that I was quite focussed, that I didn’t really give a chance to my opponent to come back,” Rublev said. “In the second set he came back, but then I played again one good game at 5-4… [From] the beginning of the third set until the end of the match I was completely focussed.”
Rublev’s tennis skill was never doubted but like his fellow Russian, Daniil Medvedev, there were questions over his temperament. He looks a much more assured presence on the court nowadays and shouldn’t falter at the first sign of struggle. He had a +20 winner/unforced error differential in his win over Caruso and if he can play as clean and aggressive a match as this one, he should be able to pick up the win in this battle of two big hitters – gaining revenge for the Italian’s straight sets win at this tournament last year.
Prediction – Andrey Rublev in four sets
