Karolina Pliskova vs Caroline Garcia US Open 2020 Preview and Prediction

Possibly the stand out match of the second round on the women’s side, Karolina Pliskova can be a vulnerable top seed against Caroline Garcia on Wednesday. The Czech is perhaps a little unfortunate to play a former top ten player so early, holding just a 3-3 record against the Frenchwoman. Jennifer Brady and Angelique Kerber being potential foes on the way to the last eight mean it will be earned if Pliskova goes deep this fortnight.

Garcia was ranked as high as No.4 two years ago but has fallen to No. 50 after a failure build on and maintain her form in 2018 and 2019. She still has a strong offensive game but the consistency does not appear to be there anymore. She eased into the second round with a 6-3 6-2 win over Jasmine Paolini to bounce back from her early Western & Southern Open exit.

Pliskova was pushed early on by Anhelina Kalinina in their opening round clash but was always in control after saving break points at 4-4 in the opening set. That was the first of eight straight games to close out her 6-4 6-0 victory, breaking the spirit of Kalinina who went away quickly in the second set.

“She’s not seeded now. I think she should be or maybe in the future she’s going to be. But very dangerous player I think. Especially on these fast courts.  I think she can play good tennis. She can serve quite well. But nothing unbeatable. So I have to play well.” Pliskova said of Garcia. Garcia can cause the top seed trouble if she is on her game but this is the kind of match Pliskova should be winning fairly comfortably if she to establish herself as a contender.

Prediction – Karolina Pliskova in straight sets
