Last year’s losing finalist Daniil Medvedev continues his attempt at going one better on Thursday when he takes on Christopher O’Connell for a spot in round three. It doesn’t seem like the Russian should be in too much trouble in this tournament until a potential fourth rounder with Grigor Dimitrov at the weekend.

O’Connell looks to finally be reaping the rewards of his hard work at ITF level. A lengthy layoff saw him outside the top 600 in February last year but he has established himself now as a solid Challenger Tour player, winning titles on both clay and hard court since then. A win over Laslo Djere in round one was fairly impressive, even more so coming back from a set down against the Serbian.
Medvedev’s opener against Federico Delbonis was as easy as expected, dropping just seven games in a comfortable win over the Argentinian. “I was playing consistent and wasn’t going for crazy shots… I managed to keep my distance and always kept pressure on his serve. That was the key.” he said afterwards.
“I know that he can play really good tennis. When Andrey Rublev was at the top of his [game] in Australia, he took a set off him” Medvedev said of his opponent. It looks like O’Connell is finally ready to become a fixture on the main tour after a decade of hard work but the No.3 seed should be a class above in this one.
