Alexander Zverev vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina US Open 2020 Preview

Alexander Zverev looks likely to make his first US Open quarter final on Sunday, taking on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a very winnable fourth round clash for the German. Should he win, it would be three quarter finals or better in the last five slams for Zverev. With Borna Coric or Jordan Thompson awaiting the winner, it could be an even better fortnight for Zverev.

Davidovich Fokina is not quite a player in the traditional Spanish way, boasting a bit more power an addition to his athleticism. It was something of a surprise to see him make it this far but back to back wins against Hubert Hurkacz and Cameron Norrie make his place in the last 16 very well deserved.

Zverev started slowly against Adrian Mannarino, losing the first set against the Frenchman. After he saved break point midway through the second set, he took control and broke another five times in the next two sets to secure a 6-7 6-4 6-2 6-2. The opening two sets will be cause for concern though after he hit 37 unforced errors in that time.

“[There’s] still lot of room for improvement. I’m not at my best yet, but I’m in fourth round of US Open, so that can only be a good thing.” he said afterwards. Zverev may find it tough against the first top player he plays but for now, he should be able to keep taking advantage of the weaker opponents in his way.

Prediction – Alexander Zverev in straight sets
