There have been few early exits amongst the higher seeds through the first two rounds in the men’s draw this year, with just one of the top ten seeds out this round. The often vulnerable Alexander Zverev looks to have figured things out after his slam disasters in previous years and looks very likely to at least be a quarter finalist this fortnight. He can move into the fourth round with victory over Adrian Mannarino, whom he holds a 2-0 record over.

Mannarino has navigated his route to the third round with the minimum of fuss, beating Lorenzo Sonego and Jack Sock to get to the last 32. He is yet to make it past the third round in New York and a tough matchup here means it may have to be fifth time lucky for the Frenchman.
After dealing with the big serving Kevin Anderson in round one, Zverev dealt with a more nimble opponent in Brandon Nakashima in round two. The tenacious young American did take a set, in large part due to an indifferent serving performance from Zverev. The German hit 10 double faults including one on set point in the 7-5 6-7 6-3 6-1 victory. “Take the 10 double faults away and it’s perfect, and I wasn’t broken today,” said Zverev, clearly disappointed with his service performance despite also hitting 24 aces.
Zverev won the previous two matches against Mannarino in straight sets and will fancy his chances of doing the same here. However, the niggling service issues could get him into more trouble the deeper he goes into the tournament.
Prediction – Alexander Zverev in straight sets
