Both of the Williams sisters will take to Arthur Ashe Stadium on Day 2 of the US Open, hoping for a deep run in the tournament. Venus kicks off the night session with a very tricky matchup against Karolina Muchova, one of the most improved players on the tour in the past 18 months. Muchova is on the verge of the top 20 it seems likely she would be comfortably inside it had she played a full season of tennis in 2020.
It has been a rough ride for Venus in her return, where she has played Lexington and Cincinnati. She played Victoria Azarenka and Serena back to back, losing the latter match to her sister. Her opening match in Cincinnati/New York came against Dayana Yastremska, where she put up an admirable fight before losing in three to the Ukrainian. The unconventional manner of this tournament is not phasing the former champion, who will have seen all sorts in her lengthy career on the tour. “As Billie Jean King said, ‘Champions adjust,’ and I am having a blast out here. I’m grateful to be able to play professional sports,” she said. “This is real life right now. This is what we’re dealing with, and you gotta run with it.”
Muchova was a rising star before her quarter final at Wimbledon last year announced her to even more casuals. She had little opportunity to build on a strong 2019 before the season shut down, going just 2-4. She was unfortunate to meet Naomi Osaka early in the Western & Southern Open but did take a set from the eventual finalist before falling in three.
The Czech has made the third round in New York two years running, losing to a future (Barty) and former (Serena) No.1 respectively. The Czech will fancy her chances of outlasting Venus in this one, although that may not be required in a matchup with two heavy hitters.
Prediction – Karolina Muchova in three sets
