Possibly the second favourite to win it all in New York, Daniil Medvedev will be out to prove that his late 2019 – including a US Open final – was not all just a fluke and he is here to stay at the top of the game. The Russian plays Federico Delbonis, in what should be a fairly straight forward opener to close out the night session on Arthur Ashe.

One look at Delbonis’ schedule would tell you he is a player who is far more comfortable on the clay and will only play on hard courts as a necessity. He comfortably lost to Jaume Munar in qualifying for the Western & Southern Open and one can assume the same will happen here as he likely extends a run of first round slam losses away from clay. 2016 was the last time he picked up a win outside of Paris, making the second round in New York.
Medvedev had made six straight finals in late 2019 with the most notable being his US Open run. He almost pulled off one of the most thrilling comebacks of all time but Rafael Nadal would edge him out in five eventually. This year hasn’t quite worked out so well so far with two quarter finals the best he has achieved in a very restricted season, one of which came at the Western & Southern Open following a three set loss to Roberto Bautista Agut.
Despite the loss, the Russian isn’t too down on his chances coming into New York. “The three matches I played, I actually liked my level,” said Medvedev. “I think my physical shape had to be better. I’ve done some adjustments, as much as I could, in just a few days. I’m really trying hard to be ready for anything that US Open can [throw at] me. Hopefully, I can just show some great tennis. Like this, I will have my chances to go deep in the tournament. That’s, of course, my goal.
Prediction – Daniil Medvedev in straight sets
