Roger+Federer+Pic Roger Federer can move one step closer in his quest for a 21st slam on Tuesday afternoon, taking on Tennys Sandgren for a spot in the semi finals. Federer should be pleased with what looks a kind draw on paper but the American has form in Australia, having made the quarter finals 2 years ago as well. Sandgren is ranked at 100 currently but plays well beyond his means at this tournament with a host of impressive wins. He is good value for his place in the last 8, adding a four set win against Fabio Fognini to his shock win over Matteo Berrettini earlier in the tournament. “I like how he moves. Very explosive. Has a nice first serve as well. He can counter-punch, but also likes to go on the attack. Reminds me a little bit of the olden days when you would do the transition game very good and very quickly. I feel like that’s what I’ve seen a lot of him doing very well.” Federer said of his opponent, well wary of the threat he poses. Federer avoided getting dragged into a troublesome situation in his round four clash with Marton Fucsovics, despite losing the first set. After he broke to begin the second, he was always in control against the Hungarian in his 4-6 6-1 6-2 6-2 win. He was an uncharacteristically efficient 7/12 on break point chances, likely in some part down to Fucsovics’ low 1st serve percentage of 47%. “I was looking to mix it up a little bit more. It gets really slow in the night time, especially when it is cool like this, so I just had to figure it out and I finally found a way,” he said afterwards. “I had a good start to the second set and from then on, things got a little bit easier.” “Getting to play on a big stadium, getting to play in front of a lot of people, because I’ve played a lot of tennis in front of the very few people, the fact I get to do that, seems to bring out the best tennis in me. It seems if I play pretty well, I have a shot.” Sandgren said on his big match play. It is likely Federer will be a step too far for the American but if he comes out the blocks firing, it could get quite sticky for the No.4 seed. A matchup with Novak Djokovic or Milos Raonic awaits the winner of this one. Prediction – Roger Federer in straight sets
