Caroline Wozniacki could well be playing her last professional match on Wednesday afternoon, as she faces Dayana Yastremska for a place in the third round. Following this tournament, she plans to retire from the tour having recently got married as well as receiving a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis in the past year.
Wozniacki would likely still remain a solid player on the tour and was in the top 20 for all of last year. She was a semi finalist in Auckland while also making the final in doubles with Serena Williams. She began with a comfortable win this week over Kristie Ahn, dropping just four games against the American. “I feel good having won my first match here,” Wozniacki said after the match. “You know, it’s always tricky, especially knowing it’s my last tournament. There’s a lot of just emotions, but I tried to keep them in check, and I thought I did that very well today.”
Yastremska is one of the more aggressive players on tour and is incredibly dangerous on her best days. She made the final of Adelaide and carried that good form into her opener in Melbourne. Kaja Juvan had no answer for her in their opener, falling 6-1 6-1 in a very one sided matchup. She is favoured to win this one but is still capable of putting up bad performances against the better defenders on the tour with her one-sided loss to Elina Svitolina at the US Open a good example of this. Wozniacki is still more than capable of giving the Ukrainian nightmares and could extend her career another 2 days if Yastremska is off her game.
Prediction – Dayana Yastremska in three sets
