Back in the tournament where she showed her potential in front of a big stage for the first time, Belinda Bencic has a great opportunity to go at least one better than her 2014 quarter-final possibly even more. She will be the favourite against Donna Vekic but it won’t be an easy one for the Swiss star.
Bencic has one of the best tennis IQs on tour and used that to great effect once more to ensure that Naomi Osaka would not defend her title, beating the champion 7-5 6-4 for her third win of the year against the current No.1. “Obviously I always adapt to my opponent – that’s just how I play,” she said. “I don’t have the biggest power, don’t have the most winners or most aces. But I think I can really read the opponent’s game well. I definitely try to do that against anyone, not only against her. Just taking the ball early and anticipating her… I think my game probably matches up well against hers.”
Vekic’s win over Julia Goerges was far more dramatic as she needed to save match point, eventually defeating the German 6-7 7-5 6-3. After struggling for much of the first two sets, she seized control with the break for 5-5 getting into return games on a more regular basis and being rewarded for it. It is also the first quarter final for Vekic, who has been having a strong 2019 herself.
Both of these players burst onto the scene at a young age only to fall back through a mix of injury and inconsistency. A great opportunity is here for both of them to make a first slam final with it likely to be Bianca Andreescu in the way of that. While Bencic leads the head to head 2-1, Vekic did win their one slam meeting at the French Open this year. The Swiss will be eager for revenge and will hope to outfox another opponent on this run.
Prediction – Belinda Bencic in three sets
